Configuration Management
The goal of configuration management, the C in FCAPS, is to monitor the network configuration information so that the effects of specific hardware and software can be managed and tracked. It may provide the ability to initialise, reconfigure, operate and shut down managed devices. Most problems are related to improper configurations of one sort or another
Each network device has a variety of version information associated with it. For example a workstation may be configured as follows:
- Router Operating system, Version 12.2(1)
- Ethernet Controller, Version 5.4
- TCP/IP software, Version 2.0
- NMS Software application, Version 6.1
- SNMP software, Version 2c
Configuration management subsystems store this information in a database for easy access. When a problem occurs, this database can be searched for clues that may help solve the problem.
